How to Set up A Dab Rig with Your Handy Bong

Dab rigs are great for taking dabs but with a few extra items, you can convert your bong into a dabbing rig.

Many of us enjoy smoking dry CBD flowers in creative ways, constantly changing things up. Dabbing is one of the newest trends that has become extremely popular, owing to its convenience and the smooth hit it delivers. Dabbing is a method where you can use a small amount of dried herb concentrates, which provides a much stronger yet smoother hit than most conventional means of smoking.

If you’ve never tried dabbing for yourself, the chances of you having a proper dab kit are slim. However, with a few adjustments, you can simply turn your bong into a dab rig! We suggest trying nectar collectors and proper dab kits over the long term, but if you’re looking for a cheap, quick option to dab, using your trusty bong is a great way to go!

Dab With Your Bong

Turning a bong into a dab rig is fine for a short term solution. It’s always best to buy a separate dab rig.

When you’re looking to create your very own dabbing bong, you’ll need a few extra items to make certain adjustments. You’ll require a quartz banger, a dab tool, a carb cap, and a torch to light up your concentrates. These are easily found in many shops and once you’ve gotten your hands on these, it’s time to get your hands dirty with the assembly!

Quartz Banger

A quartz banger is a vital piece of your setup and is used as a replacement for the bowl piece of your bong. You can also choose a titanium banger, which works just as well. However, some may dislike the metallic aftertaste of the titanium banger, making a quartz piece the ideal choice.

There are many kinds of bangers, including standard bangers, which are ideal for beginners; large bangers that offer extra airflow and vaporization; and double bangers, which are great for dabbing with friends!

Dab Tool

A dab tool or dabber is a device that is used to place a small amount of concentrate on the heated banger. The banger would be too hot to touch after heating with a torch, which is why a quartz or metallic dabber is essential to placing the concentrate.

Dabbing tools come in multiple shapes and sizes and may have extra features, like a scooper to extract the concentrate or a carb cap over the end of the dab tool.

Carb Cap

One can dab without a carb cap, but honestly, why would you want to? Carb caps are small devices that ensure maximum, efficient vaporization of your concentrates. Once the concentrate is placed on the heated banger, placing a carb cap over it allows maximum vaporization, restricted airflow, and minimum loss of vapor, giving you a great hit!

Carb caps come in many styles, ranging from plain, subtle caps, novelty caps, and themed caps, giving you plenty of options!

Torch

The last thing you’ll need to set up a dab rig for your bong is a torch. Gaslighters do not work great, so ideally you want to avoid them. You have to properly heat the banger slowly with a powerful heat source. A butane torch that has a switch and long nozzle can be ideal for heating your concentrates.

They come in different varieties as well, from mini torches for on-the-go dabbing to jumbo torches for your home. Most butane torches can be refilled as well, making your lighting solution a long-lasting one.

Using Your Bong For Dabbing

Premium glass bong with quartz banger for a perfect smoke session.

When using your bong for dabs, it’s always good to remember that it is not a permanent solution. A few other aspects to keep in mind include the bong size and angle of the piece.

You’ll need a bong that is smaller than 12 inches, as you cannot convert a bigger bong for dabbing. A large bong will not offer nearly as much control, making the smoke unmanageable. Anything smaller than 12 inches would be ideal.

The angle of the stem of the bong makes a difference too. Some bongs are built with a stem at 90 degrees, while some are built with a 45-degree stem. This angle plays a vital role in deciding what kind of banger would fit your bong’s downstem while remaining flat and perfectly parallel to the ground or table.

Next, you want to check the type of bong you have. While novelty bongs are great for chilling with your friends, they do not make a good dab rig. The bendy, twisty designs would cause problems while placing the banger. A bong with a straight tube is ideal to alter your bong into a dab rig.

Percolators in bongs are acceptable as well, as long as they are simple and small in size. They might help with filtration and cooling of the smoke. Ensure that you don’t overdo it with the percs, and you’re good to go!

Everything You Need To Use Your Bong For Dabbing

Once you have all the items to turn your bong to a dab rig, all that’s left to do is assemble the parts. You want to start with a clean bong and remove the bowl piece. Add water to the chamber of your dab rig and ensure that it doesn’t splash into your mouth as you pull.

Season all-new bangers, placing the nail in the dab rig and heating it with your torch. Do this till the nail turns red and then apply the oil of the concentrate you’re using over the nail’s head. Place it in a bowl of water once it’s fully coated, using tongs to do this.

Fit your banger in the dab rig, and fill your dabber with a small number of concentrates. Heat the nail, pointing the flame away from the dag rig. Heat till it is red and wait for a minimum of 10 seconds before adding your concentrates. Add your concentrates and place your carb cap, then move on to inhaling the vapor through the mouthpiece.
Clean all your equipment once you’re done, and make sure your bong is clean as well. And with that, you have your very own dabbing bong!
